The Inspiration Behind One One Zero Eight

The Heng Fu Landscape Area, Shanghai. The old buildings from the early 20th century, the lush phoenix trees, and the overall sense of a bygone age have been an important source of inspiration for Stan Lai since 2015. After The Concealed Treasure, his 2018 comedy hit set in a Shanghai theatre, Lai has been working on a new play inspired by the rich history of the city. Set in an old warehouse in Hongkou District, One One Zero Eight relates a multi-layered story of danger and idealism.

Synopsis

Novelist Shu Tong has just rented an old factory near Hongkou Park as her studio. Said to be the headquarters of the underground anti-Japanese force decades ago, the space has a mysterious quality. One day, Someday I’ll Find You is heard playing yet the source of the music is nowhere to be found. Finally, Shu Tong is able to identify and be connected to Bai Shi, a sculptor who lived and worked here back in 1943.

Bai Shi, uses the space as his studio, but at the same time, aided by his assistant Li, broadcasts critical intel to the anti-Japanese effort. Shu Tong finds a way to escape the suffocating blandness of her time and is transported back to 1943, joining Bai Shi in a world of chaos and danger.

By coincidence, Shu Tong obtains a piece of information crucial to the success of Bai’s operation with the codename “1108.” Despite great danger, she delivers the intel to Bai Shi and discovers a double agent by the name of Anna who looks exactly like herself. In a world where individuals are rendered so insignificant by the grave chaos of war, Shu Tong, or is it Anna, helps Bai Shi secure their hard-won victory.

Time and space are frozen in 1943. With it are sealed the fates of Shu Tong and Bai Shi. Or, could the whole thing be the novelist’s most incredible artistic creation?
